Yesterday we ventured into an area that neither I nor mom Griet has seen before! After a really good breakfast at the O’Kiep Country Hotel, we headed north towards Steinkopf, where we turned off the N7 road towards Port Nolloth. It was still cool, and although we could see many flowers, their true beauty was still hidden as they protected their petals.
Port Nolloth, was originally established in the mid-1800s as a copper export harbour from the Okiep mines. Later it became the hub of marine diamond mining. This part of the world is also known as South Africa’s Diamond Coast and we saw a lot of evidence of that! Port Nolloth also has some fishing industry, including rock-lobster canning factories! The sea with it’s huge waves looked very intimidating! Port Nolloth is also known as the gateway into the Richtersveld National Park.
Alexander Bay – Oranjemund border crossing! I guess we caused some excitement at the border crossing! Unbeknownst to us, you’re not allowed to bring in any products from animals with hooves or feathers! So our small bag of padkos biltong & droe wors, as well as eggs, cheese, long-life milk, and Ultramel custard were confiscated! We had planned to have our lunch in Oranjemund, but instead, we gobbled up what we could of the biltong & droe wors, and had a healthy helping of custard just right there in the customs parking lot!
The landscape changed a lot as we moved more towards the coast and then north to Namibia. The flowering plants were more like succulants to keep in the moisture. Some places looked erie – like moon scapes!
