Today’s route took us straight north-northwest with a slight detour to see the unusual Quiver tree forest and rock formations where the Giants play! We had a late start, as I had to sort out my SIM card for Namibia.

The Quiver Tree Forest (Kokerboom woud) near Keetmanshoop has about 250 quiver trees, which are actually giant succulents, not true trees. The name is coming from the San people who used to make Quivers for their arrows from the hollow branches of the “trees”. They only start flowering when about 30 or 40 years old, and they can live for 200-300 years.

The next stop, just about 5 km on, was at the Giants’ playground. It is an area filled with massive dolerite boulders that seem stacked by a mythical hand. These dolerite blocks were pushed up by magma and sculpted by erosion, creating a landscape that resembles a giant’s game of Jenga.
